Courtney's Gluten-Free Baking/Cooking Tips + Tricks
- Use gluten-free buns on burgers and gluten-free sandwich bread for peanut butter and jelly and grilled cheese sandwiches. If you use shared cooking implements and are making both gluten-free and conventional meals, prepare the gluten-free sandwich first, then the conventional sandwich so you reduce the chance of cross-contamination and you don’t have to wash in between sandwiches.
- Substitute gluten-free pasta for regular pasta in macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and other pasta dishes (that do not contain a sauce made with wheat flour, like a roux). Simply follow the cooking instructions on the pasta box to ensure the gluten-free pasta is prepared correctly.
- Replace conventional cookies or graham crackers called for in a piecrust with similar gluten-free cookies or grahams. Pamela's Ginger Mini Snapz make an excellent crust for cheesecake!
- There are delicious gluten-free graham crackers for making s’mores or ice cream sandwiches. Crispy gluten-free cookies also make delicious s’mores – just make sure the chocolate you use is also gluten-free!
- Don’t make things too complicated – start out with a boxed gluten-free mix for your first baking experience! This will reduce the number of ingredients you need to purchase as well as the cost. It will also be easier to put together as most boxed mixes only require you to add a few ingredients, mix, bake and enjoy!
